The Assam macaque is a robust primate of the montane forests of the eastern Himalaya, north-eastern India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar and northern Indochina. It has a yellowish brown coat and a dark bare face. It lives in groups of several dozen animals and is omnivorous and highly adaptable, though it depends on relatively well-preserved forest. Hunting and forest fragmentation have reduced it over much of its range.

Fun facts

It occupies altitudes few macaques reach: it has been recorded above 3,000 metres in the Himalaya, among rhododendron and conifer forests snow-covered in winter.
In Nepal an isolated population was found in 2004 in the Kali Gandaki valley, separated from the rest of the species by hundreds of kilometres, and whether it constitutes a subspecies of its own is still debated.
