Highlight

Palau's first strictly protected nature reserve, declared by the American trusteeship administration in 1956, with access forbidden except by special research permit

Declared in 1956, during the period when Palau was administered by the United States as a United Nations trust territory, the Ngerukewid Islands were the archipelago's first strictly protected nature reserve, with landing forbidden except by special scientific research permit from the outset, a policy of complete protection maintained for almost seven decades which makes it one of the least human-altered areas in the whole of Micronesia.
