Declared in 1993, Nouabalé-Ndoki is celebrated for its central clearing known as Mbeli Bai, informally nicknamed "Eden" by the first researchers to study it in the 1990s, where a population of western lowland gorillas was documented behaving with exceptional confidence and little fear of human presence, possibly because there has historically been no hunting in this particularly remote part of the Congo rainforest.
