Feline
The cat family: from the wildcat to the tiger.
What it means
Felids are carnivores specialised in hunting, with retractable claws in most species, long canines for holding prey and eyesight adapted to low light. Almost all are solitary and hunt by stalking, approaching unseen before a short, fast attack; the lion, which lives in groups, is the great exception. The family divides into two main branches: the big cats of the genus Panthera, such as the tiger, the leopard and the jaguar, and the rest, which include lynxes, pumas, ocelots and the cheetah.
