The rose-ringed parakeet is a green parrot with a very long tail and a red bill, with a black and pink collar in adult males. It is native to a belt of sub-Saharan Africa and to the Indian subcontinent, but the pet trade has established it in dozens of cities around the world. In Spain there are well-established feral populations in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville and other cities, and it is on the catalogue of invasive alien species.

Fun facts

It is the most widely distributed parrot in the world, largely thanks to human beings: there are established urban colonies from London and Brussels to Tokyo, Tehran and Madrid.
It competes for nest holes with native species such as the greater noctule bat in Seville, and that conflict is one of the reasons for its inclusion on the Spanish catalogue of invasive alien species.
