Panama's first marine park; it holds the Bastimentos red frog, endemic and with an exceptional colour variability between neighbouring populations

Declared in 1988, it was Panama's first marine park and protects mangroves, coral reefs and rainforest in the Bocas del Toro archipelago. It is celebrated among herpetologists for its populations of red poison frog, whose colouring varies drastically between different islands and beaches of the archipelago — from the classic deep red to orange, green or bluish variants — an internationally cited case study in speciation and colour-based sexual selection within a small geographical area.
