Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (designated on 16 November 1990; it protects 4,539 square miles)
It owes its name to a cargo ship that ran aground there carrying barrels of molasses. In August 1984 the vessel M/V Wellwood grounded on this same reef, one of the accidents that hastened the creation of the sanctuary in 1990.
