Declared in 1956, Northumberland is crossed by Hadrian's Wall, built from AD 122 to mark the northern limit of the Roman Empire in Britain and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also one of the last refuges of the native red squirrel in England, displaced across most of the country by the grey squirrel introduced from North America in the late 19th century.
