Highlight
The first national park east of the Mississippi; the granite coast of New England
Declared in 1919, Acadia was the first national park created east of the Mississippi and also the first to come entirely out of gifts of private land, driven by the philanthropist George B. Dorr and funded largely by John D. Rockefeller Jr., who also personally designed and paid for a 71 km network of car-free carriage roads still used today for walking and cycling. Its Cadillac Mountain is, at certain times of year, one of the first places in the United States to see the sunrise.
