Highlight

95% of its area is water; it protects the northern end of the Florida Reef, the third largest coral reef system in the world

Declared in 1980, Biscayne is one of the United States national parks with the highest proportion of water, close to 95% of its total area, and it protects the northern end of the Florida Reef, the third most extensive coral reef system in the world after Australia's Great Barrier Reef and the Mesoamerican Reef. Within its boundaries stands Stiltsville, a group of historic houses built on piles out in open water between the 1930s and the 1960s, kept today as an architectural curiosity inside the park.
