Ocean

Everything that lives in open water, on the seabed and on reefs, plus the places people dive.

What it means

It is the largest ecosystem and the least known: it covers almost three quarters of the planet and its water column is inhabited from top to bottom, from the sunlit surface down to trenches no photon ever reaches. This tag covers pelagic life that never touches the bottom, the coral reefs and kelp forests that sustain much of marine biodiversity, and the mangroves and estuaries where the sea meets fresh water. It brings together species, coastal parks, countries and most of the dive sites in the catalogue.
