Its body is extremely long and compressed, tapering to a point with no tail fin, which is where the name cutlassfish comes from.
The anal fin is reduced to minute spinelets, almost always embedded in the skin.
It is one of the most heavily caught species in the world by volume, above all in the Asian fisheries.
