Tropical Two-wing Flyingfish

• A single flight can cover more than two hundred metres if the fish gives itself another push with its tail as it grazes the surface, without going under.
• It reaches speeds close to seventy kilometres an hour in the water before taking off.
• Its flights often land it on the decks of ships, and seabirds catch them in the air at the moment they leave the water.
• It leaps from the water and glides above the surface on hugely enlarged pectoral fins to escape predators.
• It lives barely a year, and the floating eggs hatch in one or two weeks.
• Despite that escape strategy, it is important prey for large fish, sharks, squid, seabirds and marine mammals.
